European standard threaded steel bars BS 4449/EN 10080 B500B Chemical composition and mechanical properties
B500B is a weldable hot-rolled ribbed steel bar with a yield strength characteristic value of 500MPa produced according to the British standard BS 4449:2005 (and the European standard EN 10080), where the suffix "B" represents a medium ductility level. The core indicators are as follows:
Chemical composition (melting analysis)
B500B has strict limits on carbon equivalent to ensure weldability, with specific limits typically following the following range:
Carbon (C): ≤ 0.22%
Silicon (Si): ≤ 0.55%
Manganese (Mn): ≤ 1.60%
Phosphorus (P): ≤ 0.050%
Sulfur (S): ≤ 0.050%
Carbon Equivalent Value (CEV): ≤ 0.50% (calculated according to the formula CEV=C+Mn/6+..., slightly different from the standard version, but the upper limit is usually 0.50%)
mechanical properties
The core mechanical indicators of B500B need to meet both strength and ductility requirements, and are specified as non proportional elongation strength (Rp0.2) or lower yield strength (ReL):
Yield strength (ReL): ≥ 500 MPa (nominal value, actual test value is usually allowed within a certain upper limit, such as not exceeding 500+10%, etc., depending on the standard tolerance)
Tensile strength (Rm): ≥ 500 MPa (actual value needs to meet the requirements of strength to yield ratio, there is no separate minimum absolute value, but it is constrained by strength to yield ratio)
Strong yield ratio (Rm/ReL): ≥ 1.08 (i.e. the tensile strength is at least 1.08 times the yield strength)
Maximum Total Elongation Rate (Agt): ≥ 5.0% (This is a key ductility indicator that distinguishes B500A, B500B, and B500C, with a B-level requirement of ≥ 5.0%)
Bending performance: It is required to pass a 180 ° bending test (the bending center diameter is usually 4 times the diameter of the steel bar), and there should be no cracks on the surface after bending
Additional notes
Standard basis: Mainly comply with BS 4449:2005+A3:2016 or EN 10080 standards.
Grade difference: Belonging to the 500MPa grade, the Agt of B500A is ≥ 2.5%, while the Agt of B500C is ≥ 7.5% and the yield ratio is ≥ 1.15; B500B is between the two, balancing cost and seismic requirements, and is a commonly used grade for the main structure.
Dimensional tolerance: Weight deviation is usually controlled within ± 4.5%, and diameter deviation is limited by specific millimeters depending on the nominal diameter. ‌‌
